To a lesser degree, this is somwhat like Windows Scheduled Tasks, but in Linux, you create sartup scripts or automatic service/application lauching in rc.local.
You can add commands stright into it to run at startup.
# DOS/hacker IP’s
iptables -I INPUT -s 126.96.36.199 -j DROP
iptables -I INPUT -s 188.8.131.52 -j DROP
Other use cases might be to cleanup pids, or temp directories after power outages or running scripts that currently run on a scheduled cron job.
